As an early advocate of environmental issues, <strong>Kaoka has been working for several years against deforestation<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"#pourquoi\">Why can cocoa be a source of deforestation?<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"#engagements-kaoka\">Kaoka truly committed against deforestation<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"#comment\">How does Kaoka ensure that its cocoa chains are not responsible for deforestation?<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"pourquoi\">Why can cocoa be a source of deforestation ?<\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/le-cacao-responsable-deforestation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"534\" \/>\r\n\r\nFirst of all, a little background: how can chocolate be a vector for deforestation?\r\n\r\nThe main causes of deforestation are mining, agriculture and forestry. <strong> Worldwide, livestock and agricultural production are responsible for around 80% of deforestation.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nLike soya and palm oil, cocoa has been clearly identified as contributing to deforestation. And remember, cocoa is one of the main ingredients in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/lactualite-de-kaoka\/quelle-est-la-composition-du-chocolat\/\">chocolate<\/a>.\r\n\r\nCocoa is affected by deforestation because it is grown in tropical areas and in countries where the forests were, until now, little protected. At the same time, the growing demand for chocolate in Western countries has encouraged the felling of forest plots for cocoa plantations.\r\n\r\nIt is estimated that the development of cocoa farming has led to <strong>the deforestation of around 2.5 million hectares<\/strong> since the early 1990s, in the 4 main cocoa-producing countries: C\u00f4te d'Ivoire, Ghana, Indonesia and Nigeria.\r\n\r\n<em>Source: Cocoa certification and the fight against deforestation - CIRAD February 2021<\/em>\r\n<h2>Cocoa and pioneer fronts<\/h2>\r\nLike many other crops, cocoa farming has developed along pioneering front lines.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/schema-front-pionnier-cacao.jpg\" alt=\"Diagram of a pioneer front\" width=\"768\" height=\"231\" \/>\r\n\r\nThis phenomenon of pioneering conquest of tropical forests is unfortunately exacerbated by the falling productivity of existing plantations and the resulting low remuneration of growers.\r\n\r\nThis is a vicious circle, because once the forest is felled, the soil on this bare land rapidly becomes impoverished. The soil is a reserve of resources and nutrients that is essential for trees and their development. In poor soil, the trees health and growing are impacted and the plantation becomes less productive. Without sufficient harvests, growers are forced to extend their cultivation areas into forested areas. And so on, the forest is degraded or felled until it disappears completely.\r\n<h2>The introduction of a European regulation<\/h2>\r\nFaced with the challenge of preserving forests in the fight against climate change, the European Union has adopted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/en\/lactualite-de-kaoka\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-eu-regulation-on-zero-imported-deforestation\/\">new regulatory text<\/a> which, from January 2025, will ban the sale on the European market of products (cocoa, coffee, palm, wood, beef, soya, rubber) which have caused the deforestation of forests after 31 December 2020.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2 id=\"engagements-kaoka\">Kaoka, the chocolate truly committed against deforestation<\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13707\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/cacaoyer-producteurs-de-dos-perou.jpg\" alt=\"A cocoa tree and growers in Peru\" width=\"1200\" height=\"534\" \/>\r\n\r\nAt Kaoka, we've been taking the issue of deforestation very seriously for many years.\r\n\r\nWe know that behind the phenomenon of deforestation lies an economic necessity: <strong>the forests are cut down to enable people to grow crops and thus earn a living.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/en\/kaoka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our integrated cocoa supply chain structure<\/a>, our proximity to producers means that we are aware of the problems in producing countries much more quickly and much earlier. What sets us apart is the strong link we have with producer cooperatives. We have been working exclusively with them for over 20 years. By integrating the cocoa programs into the heart of our company strategy, we are able to work together daily and set up long-term projects alongside them.\r\n\r\nWe are convinced that <strong>it is essential to support producers in sustaining their plantations and harvests in order to combat deforestation.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nAware of the importance of producer income, our support includes a number of strong guarantees:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Buying 100% of the cocoa harvest each year to ensure a sustainable outlet,<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The purchase price of cocoa is always higher than the market price,<\/li>\r\n \t<li>An increase in productivity in existing plots thanks to our support in restoring plantations (provision of cocoa plants selected for their productivity, provision of plants for food crops, technical training, monitoring by our teams, etc).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_13763\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1200\"]<img class=\"wp-image-13763\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/garanties-kaoka-contre-la-deforestation-v2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"534\" \/> For 30 years, Kaoka has supported growers with strong guarantees.[\/caption]\r\n<h2>An 8.97 million euro project for zero deforestation cocoa<\/h2>\r\nIn parallel with this global support, Kaoka is carrying out other projects to introduce sustainable cocoa-growing methods to preserve biodiversity.\r\n\r\nIn 2021, we signed a public-private partnership for the conservation and regeneration of ecosystems, the protection of biodiversity and the promotion of truly sustainable agricultural practices within cocoa sectors in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Projet-agroecological-regenerative-cocoa.jpg\" alt=\"3 people holding the signed project document\" width=\"1200\" height=\"424\" \/>\r\n\r\nWith the support of the French Global Environment Facility and agroecology research bodies, Kaoka aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of its agroforestry cultivation model and its ability to be replicated.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/en\/lactualite-de-kaoka\/897me-pour-un-cacao-dexcellence-durable-et-zero-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u27a4 For more information on the 8,97M\u20ac project for a zero deforestation cocoa.<\/a>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"comment\">How does Kaoka ensure that its cocoa chains are not responsible for deforestation?<\/h2>\r\nTo guarantee that <strong>the cocoa in our chocolates is not responsible for deforestation<\/strong>, Kaoka has drawn up a stringent set of standards. Of course, these standards have been <strong>co-constructed with our producer organisations partners<\/strong>, with the support of agro-ecology research bodies. This document constitutes a system of guarantees which enables us to control various points throughout the cocoa production chain.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<h3>Controlling traceability<\/h3>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nGathering information is a prerequisite for implementing a \"zero deforestation\" approach. In our integrated cocoa programs, all our producer partners are clearly identified. This deforestation is a crucial and complex climate change and biodiversity concern. It has led to soil depletion, destruction of biodiversity, and an unprecedented decline in farmers\u2019 revenue. The cocoa tree agroecology regeneration project spearheaded by Kaoka aims to bring value back to cocoa farming: a cocoa of excellence that is economically viable and sustainably produced without deforestation.<\/em>\r\n\r\nThe situation is alarming in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Since the 1990s, the rapid expansion of agricultural lands is one of the main drivers of destruction of local forest ecosystems. Intensive\r\nproduction methods, in particular those of coca, drove farmers to deforest new areas for production. This phenomenon is called \u00abthe pioneer front\u00bb and has largely accelerated deforestation. The\r\nconversion of forest areas into crop lands has also led to the fragmentation of wildlife\u2019s natural habitats and degradation of biodiversity and ecosystems. The productivity of depleted lands has decreased, thus making difficult to produce staple crops and ensure sufficient income for the local populations.\r\n\r\n<strong>Kaoka\u2019s project to regenerate cocoa plantations using an agroecological approach provides concrete and expert solutions to these challenges.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nZOOM IN\u2026 ON ECOLOGICAL CONNECTIVITY\r\nEcological connectivity seeks to bridge together all the different natural areas in order to allow animals and plants to move freely, all the while restoring ecological continuity. Indeed, the loss of natural habitats and their fragmentation is a major driver of biodiversity erosion.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h2><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IMG_2061.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"400\" \/><\/h2>\r\n<h2>Concrete solutions to preserve unique biodiversity<\/h2>\r\n<h3>Develop Agroforestry<\/h3>\r\nTurning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/en\/our-approach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agroforestry techniques<\/a> in cocoa farming not only diminishes the need for farming inputs but also allows farmers to combine food crops (fruit trees, plantains, pepper plants, etc.) and forest tree species with cocoa trees. This creates a virtuous circle that guarantees immediate and long-term revenue for farmers, all the while restoring soil fertility. This approach guarantees the sustainability of cocoa farming, while limiting the expansion of agricultural land into forests. The agroforestry systems proposed within the framework of this project will be tailor-made for local ecosystems as well as for farmers\u2019 needs and goals.\r\n<h3>Reestablish ecological connectivity<\/h3>\r\nIn response to the destruction of forests, the different species that inhabit them are modifying their natural habitat. This is a particularly concerning issue for the Amazon portion of the project, both in Peru and in Colombia, a place with a great wealth of biodiversity, and its preservation is essential. By replanting hedges, shade trees, etc., the project offers a way for the different species to move from one forest area to another and rebuild their natural living environment. Restoring ecological connectivity therefore helps to preserve biodiversity endangered by previous deforestation practices.\r\n<h3>Strengthen productive infrastructure and farmers' capacity<\/h3>\r\nThis project seeks to improve the entire cocoa supply chain, from its cultivation and to its final commercialization. The technical support farmers will receive will allow them to expand and enhance their facilities for fermentation and drying of cocoa beans.\r\nWith the support of Kaoka, research work will be carried out to better control the fermentation process. Farmers will also benefit from training aimed at strengthening their skills for implementing sustainable agricultural practices.\r\n<h3>Ensure landscape conservation<\/h3>\r\nPrimary forests contain massive quantities of carbon dioxide and their destruction triggers significant greenhouse gas emissions, thus accelerating climate change.\r\n\r\nAs a part of this project, tools for impact assessment and monitoring of agricultural production areas will be developed. Through conservation agreements, farmers and farmer organizations will commit to protecting and promoting and valuing their regions\u2019 forests and limiting the expansion of their farming operations.\r\nRestoring old plantations using agroforestry increases on-farm profitability by diversifying the crops and improving land productivity.\r\nFurthermore, the project will contribute to restoring areas with severely degraded soils (old grazing areas) and putting these areas back into productive use.\r\n\r\n<strong>These two combined effects will ensure that cocoa farming does not lead to deforestation.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h2>Differentiated strategies<\/h2>\r\nIn the Andean region, cocoa is a crop of economic and social importance. Cocoa is mainly produced by small to medium family farms, comprising hundreds of thousands of farmers. Production volumes have risen significantly in response to the ever-growing demand on national and international markets. For this reason, agroforestry incorporates fruit trees and forest trees in cocoa plantations. This ancestral system fosters greater biological diversity and the formation a substrate suitable for increased crop performance. This shading system provides a microclimate, mitigates droughts and reduces disease outbreaks.\r\nBy intensifying production in the same cultivated areas, and by restoring degraded soils (damaged by grazing, for example), the forest is no longer negatively affected by the expansion of crop areas. In the context of climate change, agroforestry contributes to limiting GHG emissions and restoring soil to ensure the plantation sustainability. This phenomenon is also accompanied by an increase in greenhouse gas emissions as <strong>the soil, now bare, releases some of the stored organic carbon.<\/strong> This dual consequence is exacerbating climate change. Clearing forests also provides a <strong>gateway for new invasive species,<\/strong> upsetting the local ecosystem balance and causing the disappearance of local species.\r\n\r\nClimate change, exacerbated by deforestation and the destruction of natural environments,<strong> is also a major cause of biodiversity loss.<\/strong> In recent years, animal and plant species have been disappearing at an unprecedented rate, with serious consequences for the balance of the living world, of which we are a part. <strong>It's important to remember that our food supply is directly dependent on pollinating insect populations.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n[memo title=\"Biodiversity loss\" text=\"68% of vertebrate populations (mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians) disappeared between 1970 and 2016, in less than 50 years. \"]\r\n\r\n<strong>More than half of the world's gross domestic product is based on ecosystems and the services they provide.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2 id=\"conservation-forets\">Forest conservation: a major challenge for slowing the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss<\/h2>\r\n<h3>The causes of deforestation: between production and consumption<\/h3>\r\nLivestock farming and agricultural production are the main causes of deforestation worldwide. The European Union plays a key role here, <strong>with the EU's share of imported deforestation estimated at 36% of total trade-related deforestation over the period 1990-2008.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-14824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/EU-share-of-trade-related-deforestation-between-1990-and-2008-1200x535.jpg\" alt=\"EU share of trade-related deforestation between 1990 and 2008\" width=\"1200\" height=\"535\" \/>\r\n<h3>Imported deforestation: what is it?<\/h3>\r\n<strong>Imported deforestation represents the direct or indirect deforestation caused by the production of raw materials or processed products outside the consumer's national territory.<\/strong>\r\nGlobal deforestation is mainly linked to agriculture, mining and logging (for construction, paper and timber). 75% of deforestation is caused by agriculture, mainly cattle, palm oil and soya production. Other crops such as rice, cocoa and sugar cause forest degradation.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-14825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Agriculture-causes-75-of-deforestation-1200x770.jpg\" alt=\"Agriculture causes 75% of deforestation\" width=\"1200\" height=\"770\" \/>\r\n<h3>Why is cocoa responsible for deforestation?<\/h3>\r\nLike many crops, cocoa has developed along<strong> a pioneering front:<\/strong> <strong>Forests are cut down or degraded to make way for cocoa plantations.<\/strong> Faced with growing world demand for cocoa, West Africa - the first and main production area - has been the scene of this process of migration and pioneering conquest of tropical forests.\r\n\r\n[memo title=\"Did you know about this?\" text=\"It is estimated that cocoa farming has led to the deforestation of around 2.5 million hectares since the early 1990s in the 4 main cocoa-producing countries.\"]\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2 id=\"reglement-europeen\">A European regulation against deforestation and forest degradation<\/h2>\r\nIntroduced by the European Commission, this European regulation <strong>will prohibit the placing on the market or export from the European market of products that have contributed to deforestation or forest degradation after 31 December 2020.<\/strong>\r\n<h3>Raw materials affected by this regulation<\/h3>\r\nEntered into force on 30 June 2023, <strong>this regulation covers 7 consumer goods: coffee, cocoa, rubber, palm oil, soya, beef and timber, as well as their by-products<\/strong> such as leather, charcoal, printed paper and chocolate.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-14826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/products-prohibited-deforestation-import-regulation-european-union-1200x744.jpg\" alt=\"Diagram with prohibited products from deforestation sources\" width=\"1200\" height=\"744\" \/>\r\n\r\nIt is important to note that there will be no national transposition: this means that the regulation will be applied in the same way throughout Europe. Providing for a transition period of 18 months to give the stakeholders and operators concerned time to comply, <strong>it will come into force on 30 December 2024.<\/strong>\r\n<h3><\/h3>\r\n<h3>An essential definition of the forest<\/h3>\r\nTo determine whether deforestation is taking place, we need to agree on what defines a forest. The regulation is based on the FAO definition (\"<em>Global Forest Resources Assessment. Terms and definitions FRA 2020<\/em>\" ) of <strong>forest as land larger than 0.5 hectares with trees higher than 5 metres and a canopy cover of more than 10%<\/strong>, or trees capable of reaching these thresholds in situ. It does not include land that is mainly used for agricultural or urban purposes.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-14827\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/definition-forest-fao-1200x634.jpg\" alt=\"Diagram with definition of forest from FAO\" width=\"1200\" height=\"634\" \/>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3>A duty of due diligence<\/h3>\r\nBefore their products are exported or placed on the market, <strong>the companies affected by the application of the regulation (operators and traders) will be obliged to carry out \"due diligence\" in order to provide sufficient information to prove that the product involves no or negligible risk of deforestation.<\/strong> They will therefore need to geolocate the origin of the product or raw material at plot level.\r\n\r\nGeolocation, as defined by the regulations, is the location of a parcel of land described using latitude and longitude coordinates. For parcels larger than 4 ha, the geographical location must be provided using polygons describing the perimeter of each parcel.\r\n\r\nA system for classifying countries according to the risks associated with deforestation will be published over the next 18 months. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 adopt\u00e9 par plusieurs grands groupes et marques de chocolat.\r\n\r\nL'impr\u00e9cision des crit\u00e8res environnementaux de la certification, et plus sp\u00e9cifiquement l'opacit\u00e9 des contr\u00f4les a \u00e9t\u00e9 point\u00e9 du doigt \u00e0 plusieurs reprises par des associations de consommateurs, car cette certification pr\u00e9sente bien des limites et ne peut pas \u00eatre suffisante si on on souhaite d\u00e9guster un chocolat qui n'est pas responsable de d\u00e9forestation, d'extr\u00eame pauvret\u00e9 des producteurs et du travail forc\u00e9 d'enfants.\r\n\r\n<strong>En r\u00e9sum\u00e9, un label durable ne doit pas \u00eatre confondu avec un label \u00e9quitable : il n'assure pas de prix minimum d'achat des mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8re et n'a donc aucun engagement sur la qualit\u00e9 de vie des producteurs.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"labels-prives\"><strong>Quels sont les labels sociaux et environnementaux cr\u00e9es par les marques ?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nLes grandes entreprises du secteur chocolat se sont engag\u00e9es dans des programmes de <strong>durabilit\u00e9<\/strong>. En effet, certains produits que les produits europ\u00e9ens (dont la France) importent ont clairement \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9s comme contribuant \u00e0 de la d\u00e9forestation :\u00a0 le soja, l'huile de palme, le b\u0153uf et ses produits transform\u00e9s (cuir), le cacao, l\u2019h\u00e9v\u00e9a (caoutchouc), ainsi que le bois et ses produits d\u00e9riv\u00e9s (charbon, papier).\r\n\r\nLe cacao est donc concern\u00e9 par la d\u00e9forestation car il est cultiv\u00e9 dans des zones tropicales et dans des pays o\u00f9 les for\u00eats \u00e9taient, jusqu'\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, peu prot\u00e9g\u00e9es.\r\n\r\nDe plus, la demande croissante de chocolat des pays occidentaux pousse les producteurs \u00e0 abattre des parcelles de for\u00eat pour y \u00e9tendre leur plantation de cacao.<strong>\u00a0On estime que le d\u00e9veloppement de la cacaoculture aurait entra\u00een\u00e9 la d\u00e9forestation d\u2019environ 2,5 millions d\u2019hectares depuis le d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 90, dans les 4 principaux pays producteurs (C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Ghana, Indon\u00e9sie et Nig\u00e9ria).\u00a0<\/strong><em>(Source : Certification du cacao et lutte contre le d\u00e9forestation - CIRAD F\u00e9vrier 2021)<\/em>\r\n\r\nEt ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne de conqu\u00eate pionni\u00e8re de la for\u00eat tropicale est malheureusement aggrav\u00e9 par la baisse de productivit\u00e9 des plantations existantes et la faible r\u00e9mun\u00e9ration des producteurs qui en d\u00e9coule. C'est un cercle vicieux car une fois la for\u00eat coup\u00e9e, les sols de ces terres mis \u00e0 nu s'appauvrissent rapidement. Or, le sol est une r\u00e9serve de ressources et de nutriments indispensable pour les arbres et leur d\u00e9veloppement. Dans un sol pauvre, les arbres s'\u00e9puisent et ne deviennent improductifs. Notre sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9 r\u00e9side dans le lien tr\u00e8s fort qui nous unit avec les coop\u00e9ratives de producteurs. Nous travaillons exclusivement avec elles depuis plus de 20 ans. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cette proximit\u00e9, nous sommes en mesure d'\u00e9changer quotidiennement et de mettre en place des projets sur le long terme. Nous sommes convaincus que l'accompagnement des producteurs dans la p\u00e9rennisation des plantations et de leurs r\u00e9coltes est indispensable pour lutter contre la\u00a0 d\u00e9forestation. Cet accompagnement passe par une augmentation de la productivit\u00e9 dans les parcelles existantes et par des prix r\u00e9mun\u00e9rateurs aux producteurs.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Signature d'accords de conservation des for\u00eats avec les producteurs<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nAu-del\u00e0 des engagements associ\u00e9s \u00e0 la certification bio, nous nous assurons que la culture du cacao dans nos fili\u00e8res ne participe pas \u00e0 la d\u00e9forestation : une r\u00e8gle que nous avons int\u00e9gr\u00e9e dans notre syst\u00e8me de contr\u00f4le interne de l\u2019Agriculture biologique pour chacune de nos fili\u00e8res. Nous travaillons avec les producteurs pour signer des accords de conservation. Elle a des r\u00e9percussions importantes sur les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes et les services qui rendent \u00e0 l'humanit\u00e9 (pollinisation des cultures, purifications de l'eau, r\u00e9gulation des maladies ou encore du climat). La biodiversit\u00e9 est \u00e9galement indispensable pour l'agriculture et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire. Pourtant, nos modes d'agricultures contribue majoritairement \u00e0 cette perte de biodiversit\u00e9 : monoculture, utilisation des intrants chimiques, etc\r\n\r\nVous l'aurez compris, la perte de biodiversit\u00e9 est une pr\u00e9occupation majeure pour notre avenir et sa pr\u00e9servation, un sujet crucial. De nombreuses marque de chocolat parlent d'agroforesterie. Mais quelles sont r\u00e9ellement les actions mises en place ? Chez Kaoka, nous pensons que la cacaoculture r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rative est la meilleure fa\u00e7on de lutter contre la crise climatique. En int\u00e9grant la protection de la biodiversit\u00e9, le reboisement, la culture en agroforesterie et la restauration des sols, il est possible de produire du cacao avec un impact plus faible sur l\u2019environnement. Toutes ces pratiques permettent d\u2019am\u00e9liorer l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me des parcelles de cacao. Entre Septembre et Novembre 2022, ABC a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 des campagnes de terrain pour inventorier les oiseaux, les esp\u00e8ces de chauves-souris, les arthropodes et la microfaune du sol en comparant les syst\u00e8mes agroforestiers avec des plantations sans ombrages, des p\u00e2turages et des zones de for\u00eat primaire.\r\n\r\nLes premiers r\u00e9sultats sont passionnants : <strong>plus de 220 esp\u00e8ces d\u2019oiseaux ont par exemple \u00e9t\u00e9 recens\u00e9es dans la zone<\/strong> ! Il y a 30 ans, les for\u00eats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 coup\u00e9es pour la culture de la coca. Les pratiques intensives et la d\u00e9forestation ont consid\u00e9rablement appauvri les sols, impactant directement la productivit\u00e9 de cacao et donc les revenus des producteurs. Il est important de restaurer les sols des plantations existants pour \u00e9viter que les producteurs se tournent vers l'utilisation d'intrants chimiques ou d\u00e9frichent des for\u00eats primaires intactes afin de produire de nouveau.\r\n\r\n\u00c0 travers le projet AgroEcological Regenerative Cocoa, les sols existants sont analys\u00e9s et leur pH est corrig\u00e9. Des usines de compostage ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mises en place. Ainsi, le sol est nourri avec de la mati\u00e8re organique, des plants de couverture sont plant\u00e9s pour fixer l'azote et ainsi restaurer la texture du sol.\r\n\r\n[memo title=\"Les actions de Kaoka en chiffres\" text=\"Au P\u00e9rou, 20 tonnes de compost et 1 380 litres de micro-organismes efficaces ont \u00e9t\u00e9 produits et distribu\u00e9s \u00e0 nos partenaires producteurs en 2022.\u00a0 En \u00c9quateur, 3 472 litres de micro-organismes efficaces ont \u00e9t\u00e9 distribu\u00e9s \u00e0 nos partenaires producteurs en 2022.\"]\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Lutter contre l'\u00e9rosion<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nL'\u00e9rosion est le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne qui caract\u00e9rise la perte de terre sur une surface. Elle peut \u00eatre caus\u00e9e par l'activit\u00e9 humaine (d\u00e9forestation), par les pluies ou encore par le vent. L'\u00e9rosion entra\u00eene la perte de la couche superficielle du sol et les mati\u00e8res organiques qui la constitue. L'\u00e9rosion diminue donc fortement la fertilit\u00e9 des sols et donc la croissance des cultures.\r\n\r\nNos producteurs partenaires au P\u00e9rou sont confront\u00e9s \u00e0 ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne. Les fortes pluies provoquent les d\u00e9bordements des cours d'eau entra\u00eenant des inondations des plantations. Les jeunes cacaoyers plant\u00e9s peuvent \u00eatre emport\u00e9s et les autres arbres, ab\u00eem\u00e9s. Les pertes caus\u00e9es sont parfois importantes, impactant n\u00e9gativement les r\u00e9coltes des producteurs et donc leurs revenus. Pour renforcer et stabiliser les rives, celles-ci sont massivement reforest\u00e9es. A terme, cela permettra de limiter les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts caus\u00e9s par les crues importantes.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/lactualite-de-kaoka\/kaoka-engage-pour-un-cacao-zero-deforestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">En savoir plus le projet AgroEcological Regenerative Cocoa<\/a>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n<h2>Comment savoir si le chocolat que j'ach\u00e8te respecte les producteurs et n'est pas responsable du travail des enfants ?<\/h2>\r\n<h3 id=\"equitable\">Les certifications \u00e9quitables<\/h3>\r\nL'objectif principal d'une certification \u00e9quitable est de garantir que les producteurs re\u00e7oivent une r\u00e9mun\u00e9ration juste pour leur production, \u00e9voluent dans des conditions de travail d\u00e9centes, b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient d'un soutien communautaire gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une prime \u00e9quitable et que dans l'ensemble les pratiques agricoles utilis\u00e9es soient durables et respectueuses de l'environnement. \u00c0 long terme le commerce \u00e9quitable a pour vocation de r\u00e9duire les in\u00e9galit\u00e9s sociales et environnementales.\r\n\r\nUne certification \u00e9quitable est attest\u00e9e par un organisme tiers et ind\u00e9pendant, elle garantit qu'un produit et l'entreprise qui le fabrique respectent un ensemble de crit\u00e8res d\u00e9finis. Pour les produits chocolats, il existe plusieurs certifications \u00e9quitables : Fair for Life, Biopartenaire, Max Havelaar, Le Symbole des Producteurs Paysans, World Fair Trade Organization. Ces labels sont externes et ind\u00e9pendants aux marques de chocolat, ils vous assurent transparence et contr\u00f4le sur les crit\u00e8res \u00e9quitables d'un chocolat.\r\n\r\nLes labels \u00e9quitables sont identifiables par un logo sur les emballages, ils permettent de signaler l'engagement des produits aux consommateurs et ils sont la preuve de la conformit\u00e9 entre pratiques mises en \u0153uvre sur le terrain et les engagement du cahier des charges.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_13001\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"860\"]<img class=\"wp-image-13001 size-full\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaoka.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/les-differents-lables-equitables.jpg\" alt=\"Les diff\u00e9rents labels \u00e9quitables\" width=\"860\" height=\"190\" \/> Les diff\u00e9rents labels \u00e9quitables pour les produits chocolats[\/caption]\r\n<h3 id=\"mass-balance\">Fabrication \u00e9quitable en Mass Balance ou en S\u00e9gr\u00e9gu\u00e9<\/h3>\r\n<strong>La tra\u00e7abilit\u00e9 est la seule fa\u00e7on de s'assurer que les producteurs, <\/strong>au tout d\u00e9but de la cha\u00eene d'approvisionnement du cacao,<strong> ont bien b\u00e9n\u00e9fici\u00e9 de tous les crit\u00e8res mis en place par le commerce \u00e9quitable<\/strong> (prix d'achat minimum garanti, versement d'une prime de d\u00e9veloppement pour des projets collectifs, dur\u00e9e des partenariats). En tant que consommateur, cela signifie que si vous pouvez retracer l'origine d'un cacao \u00e9quitable, vous pouvez avoir la certitude que tous les engagements du commerce \u00e9quitable ont bien \u00e9t\u00e9 honor\u00e9s.\r\n\r\nEt c'est l\u00e0 que les choses peuvent se compliquer, car il existe deux mod\u00e8les diff\u00e9rents de fabrication de produits certifi\u00e9s \u00e9quitables : <strong>la fabrication par s\u00e9gr\u00e9gation<\/strong>\u00a0et<strong>\u00a0la fabrication en mass balance ou bilan de masse<\/strong>.\r\n\r\nDans le mod\u00e8le de <strong>fabrication \u00e9quitable en s\u00e9gr\u00e9gu\u00e9, <\/strong>la tra\u00e7abilit\u00e9 physique du cacao est garantie : on utilise seulement des f\u00e8ves de cacao \u00e9quitables pour fabriquer du chocolat certifi\u00e9 \u00e9quitable. Dans un mod\u00e8le de <strong>fabrication \u00e9quitable en mass balance,<\/strong> la quantit\u00e9 totale de cacao certifi\u00e9 \u00e9quitable achet\u00e9e par une entreprise est enregistr\u00e9e, mais il est difficile pour un consommateur de savoir exactement quelles f\u00e8ves ont r\u00e9ellement \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9es dans sa tablette de chocolat. Car le mass balance permet de m\u00e9langer des f\u00e8ves de cacao certifi\u00e9es \u00e9quitables avec d'autres f\u00e8ves provenant de sources conventionnelles.
